After the hard work of a Ph.D. most graduates have to make a tough choice between a career in academia or big industry. Yevhen Fatieiev chose a different path! Just graduated from Advanced Membranes and Porous Materials (AMPM) Center he looked for new business models based on innovation and joined Scimagine, a startup founded in KAUST.

Yevhen worked for four years under the supervision of Prof. Niveen Khashab, producing several publications and a thesis entitled ‘Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Bridged Silsesquioxane Nanoparticles for Cancer Nanomedicine’. This dissertation discusses the critical points of safe biodegradable nanoplatforms, delivery of large biomolecules, and cytotoxicity related to shapes of nanoparticles.

The Ph.D. journey develops not only scientific knowledge but important skills and attitude relevant to professional life. You must believe in your work and adapt to an ever changing environment – these skills are also essential to working for a startup.

“When something fails, you have to constantly reconsider the strategy. Knowing how to deal with failures is as important as with successes. Everything is constantly changing, uncertainty is constant. All this is learned during the years of thesis research”, says Yevhen.

Scimagine has mission to make experimental data searchable, visible, and visually appealing. It has recently acquired a new member, Yevhen, as a Chief Database Curator. In this role he will continue scientific development of architecture and design for the Web-based platform database for storage, classification, and indexing of nanomaterials

Talented individuals trained at AMPM Center have a proven impact in the World and at KAUST.

We wish you a career full of success, Yevhen!
